A band that grew up on this floor

There are Canadian bands with longer discographies, but few have a tighter relationship with a single Vancouver room than 54-40 has with the Commodore. Neil Osborne and Brad Merritt started the group in the Vancouver suburb of Tsawwassen at the top of the 1980s, and the band came up through the same West Coast post-punk and college-radio circuit that fed the sprung-floor ballroom on Granville. Four decades and a shelf of platinum records later, a two-night Commodore booking still reads less like a routine tour date and more like an annual civic ritual.

The catalogue they will be drawing from is deep enough to make a setlist genuinely difficult: "Baby Ran," "I Go Blind," "One Day in Your Life," "Ocean Pearl," "Since When," "She La," "Nice to Luv You," "Lies to Me," "Love You All." The current lineup pairs the two founders with guitarist Dave Genn and drummer Matt Johnson, a configuration that has held long enough to make the older material sound like a working band's repertoire rather than a heritage act's obligation.

Why Porto matters to this run

The new album is the reason these dates exist, and it has a good origin story. The band decamped to the northern Portuguese city of Porto and set up at Arda Recorders with Warne Livesey, the producer behind some of their best-known work. Bed tracks were captured with the band playing live in the room, and the whole thing was finished in eleven days, a speed record for them. Osborne has described Porto as "an album about renewal and resilience," and told the band's own site that the sessions felt like the record "was writing itself, in terms of the whole making of the album." Merritt's summary was blunter: "Recording in Porto was an amazing experience."

The cover art earns the title too. It is a composite photograph of the Ponte de Dom Luís I, the double-deck iron bridge over the Douro River, with a lone figure crossing it under an umbrella. That figure is Osborne, on his daily walk from the band's lodgings to the studio. Eleven tracks came out of those two weeks, including the rolling opener-adjacent single "Running for the Fence," the slow-building "Thank You Mother" with saxophone from Osborne's brother David, and the closing "Work Not Worry," which very nearly gave the album its name.

What that means for a Commodore crowd is a set with real new material in it. Bands at this stage of a career often tour a new record and play three songs from it; 54-40 have historically been willing to lean harder into current work, and Porto is built from the kind of live-in-a-room performances that translate cleanly to a 1,000-capacity ballroom. Two nights also gives them room to move, which is worth noting for anyone deciding which date to buy.
