Shows we'd buy tickets for

Daniel Caesar at Rogers Arena, Monday August 17

The Toronto singer-songwriter booked two nights at Rogers Arena on the Son of Spergy Tour, and tonight is the second of them. Son of Spergy is Caesar's fourth studio album and his highest-charting release to date, a record that trades some of the hushed intimacy of Freudian for fuller, more searching arrangements. Caesar has always been a slow-burn live act, the kind who lets a song sit in the room before he fills it, which makes an arena an interesting test. Tickets.

Goose at the Commodore Ballroom, Tuesday August 18

Formed in Connecticut in 2014, Goose have spent the past few years being handed the jam-band torch by audiences who grew up on Phish and Umphrey's McGee, and they have earned it the old-fashioned way, by touring relentlessly and never playing the same set twice. They are out behind Chain Your Dragon, and the Commodore's sprung dance floor is close to the ideal room for a band whose songs routinely stretch past the fifteen-minute mark. Doors and start time are early at 6:30 p.m., so this is not a show to stroll into at nine. Tickets.

BINI at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Tuesday August 18

The eight-member Filipino group have moved from Manila phenomenon to genuine global export in the space of two years, and the SIGNALS World Tour is their second worldwide headline run. Vancouver is the only British Columbia stop on the entire routing, which means the city's large Filipino community and a fast-growing P-pop audience will all be in one room. Expect precision choreography, a full live band arrangement of the group's hits, and one of the loudest theatre crowds of the summer. Tickets.

Gallant at the Hollywood Theatre, Saturday August 22

Ology turns ten this year, and Gallant is marking it with a North American run built around the album that introduced his falsetto to a wider audience in 2016. It is a record that has aged unusually well, sitting somewhere between alternative R&B and art-pop, and the Hollywood Theatre on West Broadway is a fittingly intimate room for it. Tickets.

Blue Rodeo and The Guess Who at the Freedom Mobile Arch, August 22 and 23

Hastings Park's mass-timber arch, built for this summer's FIFA Fan Festival programming, keeps working through August with a Summer Nights slate of heritage Canadian acts. Blue Rodeo take Saturday, four decades into a catalogue that still sounds like the definitive Canadian bar-band songbook, and The Guess Who follow on Sunday. Two nights, two very different eras of the same national story. Tickets for both run through TicketLeader.

Silkworm at the Rickshaw Theatre, Sunday August 23

This is the week's most quietly significant booking. Silkworm, the wiry, literate indie rock band that ran from the late 1980s until drummer Michael Dahlquist's death in 2005, are touring the West Coast again with Andy Cohen and Tim Midyett joined by returning founding member Joel R. Phelps and a new drummer. Nina Nastasia opens. For anyone who wore out Firewater or Italian Platinum, the Rickshaw on a Sunday night is not a small thing. Tickets.

Also worth your night

Fink brings his hushed, blues-inflected songwriting to the Hollywood Theatre on Wednesday before heading to Victoria's Capital Ballroom on Thursday. Thursday in Vancouver belongs to two very different rooms: Alela Diane at the Biltmore Cabaret and Amy Helm at St James Hall, both worth the trip for anyone who likes their folk unhurried. Friday is the week's busiest night, with Krooked Kings and LA CANTINA at The Pearl, Pluko at Fortune Sound Club, DJ Diesel at the Harbour Event Centre, and The Cybertronic Spree doing their Transformers-costumed thing at the Biltmore. Saturday adds Deb Never and The Knocks, plus Dutch Interior with Plow at the Fox Cabaret. Ali Wong also holds down the Queen Elizabeth Theatre for four straight nights from Wednesday through Saturday, and the LEE SANG JUN SHOW closes the week at the Vogue Theatre on Sunday.
