Shows we'd buy tickets for

The B-52s and DEVO - Rogers Arena, Sunday September 27

Two of new wave's most enduring party bands share a stage for the Cosmic De-Evolution Tour, and Vancouver's Rogers Arena date is the only Canadian stop on the eight-city run. Expect DEVO's red-domed art-punk ("Whip It," "Girl U Want") followed by The B-52s' technicolor dance-floor catalogue ("Rock Lobster," "Love Shack," "Roam"), with DJ Cummerbund opening. Doors and set times point to a 7 p.m. start. Tickets.

Chance the Rapper - Freedom Mobile Arch, Friday September 25

Chance the Rapper marks a decade of Coloring Book by playing the 2016 mixtape front to back, the record that won the Grammy for Best Rap Album and helped make a streaming-only release a serious awards contender. The Freedom Mobile Arch show at the PNE pairs the full-album run with favourites from across his catalogue. Tickets.

Fatboy Slim - Malkin Bowl, Friday September 25

Norman Cook brings his big-beat DJ set to the open air of Stanley Park for one of just two North American dates this fall. Nearly three decades on from You've Come a Long Way, Baby, a Fatboy Slim show is still built on the same idea: enormous hooks, brighter-than-daylight visuals and a crowd that does not sit down. Malkin Bowl is the rare Vancouver room that fits it. Tickets.

Big Thief - Malkin Bowl, Thursday September 24

The night before Fatboy Slim, Malkin Bowl hosts a very different kind of headliner. Big Thief arrive on the Somersault Slide 360 Tour behind new material, and Adrianne Lenker's writing has only sharpened since Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You. A dusk set under the trees at Malkin Bowl suits their quiet-to-cathartic dynamics as well as any indoor room could. Tickets.

Hermanos Gutierrez - Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Thursday September 24

The Swiss-Ecuadorian brothers turned their instrumental desert-blues into one of the most quietly successful live draws in guitar music, and the Los Ojos del Condor Tour lands them in a proper seated hall. At the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, the cinematic wash of their Dan Auerbach-produced records should sound enormous. Tickets.

Arlo Parks - The Pearl, Tuesday September 22

The Mercury and Brit Award winner's Desire Tour has moved from the Orpheum to The Pearl on Granville, a smaller and now 19+ room; existing tickets are being honoured. Parks builds warm, literate bedroom-soul, and the more intimate setting should reward the diary-entry detail of her songwriting. Tickets.

Peter Hook & The Light - Commodore Ballroom, Sunday September 27

Joy Division and New Order co-founder Peter Hook closes the week at the Commodore Ballroom, where his band The Light have made a specialty of playing those catalogues with the low-slung bass lines that defined both. For anyone choosing between the arena and the ballroom on Sunday, this is the deep-catalogue option. Tickets.
