Beth Orton plays the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver on Sunday, October 4, 2026, with Kenny Stahl opening and a 7 p.m. start. The show supports The Ground Above, her first new album in four years, released June 26 on Partisan Records. Vancouver did not appear on the itinerary Orton announced in April, when Toronto was billed as her only Canadian stop, and the date now falls at the very end of the North American run.

A date that was not on the poster
When Orton laid out the fall routing in April, the North American leg ran from Washington, D.C. on September 15 through Seattle on October 3, with a single Canadian date at Toronto's Concert Hall on September 22. Vancouver was nowhere on it. The Commodore booking arrived later, slotting in the night after Seattle and more than a week before the UK leg opens in Brighton on October 12. On the dates as published, that makes the Commodore the last room she plays on this continent before crossing the Atlantic.
It is also, by some margin, the biggest room of the North American run. Orton has spent this tour in listening venues built for exactly the kind of record she is touring: Le Poisson Rouge in New York, the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, the Troubadour in Los Angeles, a converted church in Portland. The Commodore, with its sprung floor and roughly 1,000-person capacity, is the outlier on the leg, and the early Sunday start suggests a show pitched closer to a theatre night than a late one.
The Ground Above
The Ground Above runs eight songs and is self-produced, which is a first for Orton and the clearest signal of what she wanted from it. She built it with a small circle of collaborators: Nick Hakim, drummer Tom Skinner of The Smile and Sons of Kemet, multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, and Sam Beste, who records as Vernon Spring. The title track surfaced in March, and the second single, Waiting, followed in April. Orton described that song as "a celebration of moving out of the holding pattern fear keeps us in," which doubles as a fair description of the album's mood. The playing is loose and unhurried, and the arrangements lean on piano, woodwinds and brushed drums rather than programming.
That is a long way from the records that made her name. Orton arrived in the mid-1990s as the voice that made electronic producers sound human, singing on William Orbit's Strange Cargo sessions and on two Chemical Brothers albums, and her 1996 debut Trailer Park set acoustic songwriting against trip-hop drum programming so persuasively that the music press invented a genre label for it. She has spent the three decades since steadily stripping that hybrid back. Weather Alive, the 2022 album that preceded this one, was written largely at a secondhand upright piano and drew the strongest reviews of her career, landing on year-end lists on both sides of the Atlantic. The Ground Above extends that approach rather than resetting it.
Material this quiet asks something of a room, and the Commodore is capable of giving it when the bill is right. This is the kind of booking that rewards showing up for the opener and staying put. Anyone building an October calendar can find the full slate of Vancouver shows on our concert calendar.
