The album that started it
Passover arrived in April 2006, two years after the band formed in Austin and took its name from the Velvet Underground's "The Black Angel's Death Song." It is ten tracks long and it does not hurry. "Young Men Dead" opens with the tremolo-heavy riff that became the band's calling card, and the record closes with "Call to Arms," an eighteen-minute drone that most bands would have trimmed and this one simply let run. In between sit "Black Grease," "The First Vietnamese War," "Manipulation" and "Bloodhounds on My Trail," songs that turned a Texas four-track aesthetic into something closer to a genre reset.
Two decades later that album is why a psych revival exists at all in its current shape. The Black Angels went on to launch Austin Psych Fest, now known as Levitation, which gave the scene a yearly gathering point and a pipeline for bands who sounded nothing like the indie rock of the late 2000s. Playing Passover front to back is less a nostalgia exercise than an argument about where the last twenty years of fuzz, reverb and organ drone actually came from.
The band arriving in Vancouver is the current one: Alex Maas on vocals and bass, Christian Bland and Jake Garcia on guitars, Stephanie Bailey on drums and Misti Hamrick on bass. Their most recent studio album, Wilderness of Mirrors, came out in 2022 and leaned harder on mellotron, strings and keyboards than anything in the catalogue, which makes the back-to-basics premise of this tour a genuine shift in register rather than a victory lap.
What to expect at the Commodore
The anniversary run began in the spring with a leg through the Southeast, Northeast and Midwest, with L.A. Witch supporting. The West Coast dates land this fall, and Vancouver gets one of them. The Commodore is the right room for it: a sprung dance floor, a low ceiling and a PA that has been pushing this kind of low-end for decades. A Monday night show with an eighteen-minute closer is a particular kind of commitment, and the Commodore's 19-plus crowd tends to be the one that makes it.
Ghostwoman opens. For anyone building a fall calendar around it, the rest of the month is unusually deep, and the full Vancouver concert calendar has the running list.
