Ten years of Coloring Book

When Coloring Book arrived on May 13, 2016, it did more than cap the run Chance the Rapper had started with the mixtapes 10 Day and Acid Rap. Released free and streaming-first, with no record label behind it, the project debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of streams alone, the first album ever to chart that way. Its gospel-choir highs and guest-stacked posse cuts, with turns from Kanye West, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz and gospel great Kirk Franklin, turned an independent Chicago artist into one of the defining voices of the decade.

The awards followed. Coloring Book became the first streaming-only album to win a Grammy, taking Best Rap Album at the 2017 ceremony, while "No Problem" won Best Rap Performance and Chance was named Best New Artist the same night. Songs like "Blessings," "All Night," "Same Drugs" and "Angels" have only grown in stature since, and this tour puts the whole record on stage in sequence.

The anniversary run spans 37 dates across the United States and Canada, and Chance has said each night pairs a complete performance of Coloring Book with a spread of favorites from across his work. Expect the live band and choir arrangements that have always set his shows apart, built for a record that leans on communal, hands-in-the-air moments rather than backing tracks.

Vancouver's stop lands at the Freedom Mobile Arch, the open-air stage on the PNE's Hastings Park grounds, on a late-September Friday night. Chance is no stranger to British Columbia stages; Scene in the Dark last caught him on a BC festival stage at Squamish. Doors are at 7 p.m., and you can line up the rest of your autumn on our Vancouver concert calendar.
