Twenty-five years of the loudest two-piece in Canada

Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler have been making an unreasonable amount of noise for a band with no guitarist since 2001, which makes this run a quarter-century lap. The formula has not moved much: Keeler's bass pushed through so much distortion and fuzz that it does the work of a rhythm section and a lead guitar at once, Grainger drumming and singing at the top of his register, and songs that rarely outstay three minutes. It was a strange, abrasive idea in 2004, when You're a Woman, I'm a Machine arrived in the middle of the dance-punk boom. It has aged far better than most of what surrounded it.

The tour takes its name from Private Lives, which the band's camp has slated as a fall release and which would be their fifth studio album, following The Physical World (2014), Outrage! Is Now (2017) and Is 4 Lovers (2021). That gap between records has never translated into a gap in touring. Since reuniting in 2011 the duo has come back through Vancouver almost every album cycle and several times between, which is why a room like the Vogue makes sense: big enough to sell out, small enough that the low end has somewhere to go.

Their Vancouver history, and the Halloween slot

The band's own gig archive traces a long line through this city. There was the Commodore Ballroom in November 2011 on the reunion run, the PNE Forum in April 2016, the Commodore again in 2017, 2019 and 2022, and most recently the Vogue Theatre in November 2024. Scene in the Dark shot that last one. Vancouver has been a reliable stop for them for more than twenty years, going back to club shows at Mesa Luna and the Croatian Cultural Centre in 2003 and 2004.

What is new is the date. The Private Lives run comes up the coast from Portland on October 29 and Seattle on October 30 before crossing the border, which lands Death From Above 1979 on a Granville Street stage on Halloween night, then sends them east to Calgary on November 2 and Edmonton on November 3. Vancouver gets the only British Columbia date of the tour, and it happens to be the one night of the year when the audience will already be in costume.

Opening are Wine Lips, the Toronto outfit built around Cam Hilborn and drummer Aurora Evans, who have spent the better part of a decade turning garage psych into something closer to a sprint. Their 2021 record Mushroom Death Sex Bummer Party is the one that broke them internationally, and their live show is loud, fast and short on breathing room, which is roughly the correct temperature for this bill. Get in early for them.
