The record that took a Vancouver band across the border
Default formed in Vancouver and released The Fallout in 2001, at the precise moment Canadian post-grunge was finding an audience well beyond its own borders. The album went multi-platinum in Canada and produced three singles that defined the band's run: Wasting My Time, which became a Billboard Mainstream Rock hit and established Default's profile in the United States, plus Deny and Slow Me Down. The following year the band took home the JUNO Award for Best New Group.
Twenty-five years on, the anniversary is being marked properly rather than quietly. 604 Records, the Vancouver label that has carried the band's catalogue, is issuing a newly remastered 25th Anniversary Edition of The Fallout pressed on vinyl for the first time, with updated artwork built around a photo collage from the era, full printed lyrics and a new note from the band. For a record that arrived at the tail end of the CD's dominance, a debut vinyl pressing is a genuinely overdue piece of housekeeping.
The tour itself is a compact affair: 11 shows across five provinces, opening September 21 in Grande Prairie, working through Prince George, Red Deer, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary and Edmonton, then landing at the Commodore on October 3. Three Ontario dates in late November close it out. Wide Mouth Mason, the Saskatoon trio whose own catalogue runs back to the mid-1990s, supports the western leg including Vancouver; Limblifter takes the Ontario shows. Frontman Dallas Smith has spent recent years building a substantial country solo career, which makes a full band run through this material less of a routine nostalgia lap and more of a deliberate return.
The Commodore is the right room for it. Its sprung dance floor and roughly 1,000-capacity footprint put a band this size close enough to the crowd that a 25-year-old record can still feel like a club show rather than a heritage exercise, and it is the venue where a good number of the people in the room almost certainly saw Default the first time around.
