A tour that ends where the map runs out

Kennedy announced the fall run in March, and the routing tells its own story: a long crawl from the Midwest through Canada and the Northeast, down the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, then west through Colorado for a Red Rocks night on October 17 before Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland. Rogers Arena is the terminus. Closing nights tend to be loose in the best way, and for a performer whose live reputation rests on the size of his voice rather than production spectacle, that usually means a longer set and a band with nothing left to save.

The album behind it arrived on April 3 through Interscope and Island. The Weight of the Woods is Kennedy's third studio record, and it debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, making him the first Irish solo artist to top that chart with each of his first three studio albums. It is a deliberately rooted record: the credits run to uilleann pipes, bodhran, tin whistle, concertina and a chamber choir from Maynooth University, and the writing keeps circling back to Ireland rather than away from it.

Three singles set it up. "Funeral" landed in January, "Refuge" in February and "Honest" in March, and together they sketch the shape of the album: grief and steadiness handled at the same volume. Kennedy has always worked in that register, somewhere between folk balladry and the rasp of hip-hop-influenced phrasing he picked up busking in Dublin, and the new material gives him more acoustic space to fill than the arena-pop production of his earlier records did.

Vancouver audiences have followed him up the venue ladder for years, from club shows to theatres, and an arena finale is a reasonable measure of how far that has gone.
