The album that rewrote the rules
When DJ Shadow, born Joshua Paul Davis, released 'Endtroducing' in 1996, it changed what a producer could do with a crate of records. Built almost entirely from vinyl samples using an Akai MPC60 sampler, a Technics turntable and a tape machine, the album is widely regarded as the first constructed wholly from samples, and it recast instrumental hip-hop as something cinematic and deeply personal.
Three decades on, tracks like 'Midnight in a Perfect World,' 'Building Steam with a Grain of Salt' and 'Organ Donor' still sound like a blueprint for trip-hop and much of the sample-based music that followed. For this anniversary run, Shadow says he is spotlighting the debut in full for the first time, a set the album's devoted following has waited years to hear on stage.
The tour spans 19 North American dates, and the October 30 stop at the Commodore Ballroom is a fitting home for it. The Commodore's sprung dance floor and intimate sightlines suit a show built on deep grooves and turntable craft, and a Halloween-eve date only adds to the atmosphere. The Commodore has long been one of Vancouver's most storied rooms for exactly this kind of night.
