A tour that ends where the story started
Most touring musicians treat the last night of a run as a logistical fact. For Wolfhard, the routing does something more interesting: The Common Side Effects Tour opened on the east coast in mid-July, swung through Lollapalooza and Osheaga, picked back up in October across the American south and west, and then stops. Not in Los Angeles, where he works, and not in New York, where the industry is. It stops on Granville Street, about half an hour from where he grew up.
Wolfhard was born in Vancouver in December 2002, and the city is where his music actually began. Calpurnia, the indie rock band he formed here as a teenager with drummer Malcolm Craig, guitarist Ayla Tesler-Mabe and bassist Jack Anderson, came together in 2017, signed to Royal Mountain Records, released the Scout EP, toured hard, and wound down in 2019. What followed was The Aubreys, his duo with Craig, and then a solo turn under his own name with the album Happy Birthday. Vancouver audiences have watched all of it happen in real time, often in rooms considerably smaller than this one.
Fire From The Hip, out since July 10, is the record this tour is built around, previewed earlier in the year by the single "I'll Let You Finish." It arrives with Wolfhard nine years past the formation of Calpurnia and long past the point where the Stranger Things association is the most interesting thing about the project. The live show, by the end of a run this long, is typically the version of a record you want to hear: road-tested, faster, louder, and less careful than the studio take.
The Commodore is the right size for it. The spring-loaded dance floor has hosted almost every Vancouver act that eventually outgrew Vancouver, and a 1,100-capacity hometown finale gives the night a specific kind of charge that a mid-tour Tuesday in Charlotte simply cannot manufacture. Expect a room that knows the Calpurnia songs, whether or not they get played.
