A duo that never needs a chorus

Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez have built one of the more unlikely followings in contemporary guitar music. The brothers, raised in Switzerland by an Ecuadorian mother, make instrumental records built from twinned electric and acoustic guitars, brushed percussion and a great deal of open space. There are no vocals and no obvious hooks, and yet the pair have spent the past few years graduating from clubs to theatres across North America and Europe, a decade and six albums into their career.

Much of that momentum traces back to Dan Auerbach, who signed the duo to his Easy Eye Sound label and has produced their recent work at his Nashville studio. Their 2024 album Sonido Cósmico pushed the project further into the desert-noir territory that first drew listeners in. The new record moves the compass south and up.

What Los Ojos Del Cóndor is about

Recorded with Auerbach at Easy Eye Sound, the 10-track album takes its title from the condor that appears on the flag of Ecuador. The brothers have described it as a deliberate turn away from the American Southwest imagery of their earlier work and toward the Andes, drawing on their great-grandfather's Peruvian roots along with Argentine milonga and Peruvian-Colombian cumbia rhythms.

"This is a love letter to South America," Alejandro Gutiérrez said when the album was announced in June. Lead single "Canto Andino" sets the tone: a bright, almost pastoral melody that keeps sliding back down into low, clouded slide-guitar tones, which the brothers have compared to the way weather turns in the mountains.

Why the Vancouver date matters

Tour openers are their own kind of event. Vancouver gets the first performance of this material in North America, played the night before anyone can stream the finished record, which means much of the set will land on a room hearing it cold. The Queen Elizabeth Theatre is also a sensible match for the music. This is a duo whose dynamics run from a whisper to a swell and back, and a seated hall with proper acoustics serves that far better than a bar.

From Vancouver the run works down through the Pacific Northwest before reaching Denver and the Southwest, with stops in Albuquerque and Phoenix, plus a series of previously announced dates supporting Jack Johnson that include two nights at the Hollywood Bowl. The European leg begins November 13 in Gdańsk and closes with back-to-back hometown shows in Zurich on December 20 and 21.
