Jacklin has not toured North America behind a new record since PRE PLEASURE in 2022, and a fair bit has changed in the gap. In June she announced her first global record deal, signing to 4AD, the British label whose roster has long been a natural home for the kind of writing she does: plainspoken, unhurried, and willing to sit in an uncomfortable feeling for a full verse rather than resolving it. The Gem is the first record of that partnership, and this run is the first chance most of the continent gets to hear it played live.

The album takes its name from a bar in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood. Jacklin found the place after moving down from Sydney in 2017, knowing almost nobody in the city, and it became the room she kept turning up to. Years later she recorded the album in converted accommodation upstairs from that same pub, with Robert Muinos producing and a band of friends: Jacob Diamond on guitar, Mimi Gilbert on bass, Jess Elwood on drums. Because it was a working bar in a residential block, the sessions could not run late, and the building bled into the takes anyway, foot traffic next door and the kitchen crew downstairs. Jacklin has said the record took close to a year rather than the two weeks she expected. "I want to love and be loved, but I also want to be free," she has said of the tension the songs keep circling.

The lead single, Get Away From Me (I Think I'll Love You Soon), arrived with the announcement, and the ten-track album closes with I Wish, a collaboration with fellow Australians The Maes. Before the North American leg she played a short run of in-store performances across the UK and Ireland, which is a good indication of how these songs were built: small rooms first, bigger ones after.

The Commodore is a sensible fit for where she sits right now, a 1,000-capacity sprung-floor room that rewards the quiet passages as much as the loud ones. Vancouver falls between Portland on October 26 and Seattle on October 28, the middle night of a west coast stretch, and it is the only stop west of Ontario on the entire Canadian portion of the tour.
