Thirty years of a mix that outgrew its series

Studio !K7 released DJ-Kicks: Kruder & Dorfmeister on August 19, 1996. At the time it was simply the next instalment in a young mix-CD series, slotted between entries from Claude Young and Stacey Pullen. It did not stay that way. The mix pulled trip hop and jazzstep into the same slow-burning hour, threading Thievery Corporation's "Shaolin Satellite" and The Herbaliser's "A Mother" through the duo's own "High Noon" and "Black Baby," and it kept selling long after the release cycle should have ended. Impala eventually recognised it for a quarter of a million European sales, a number most DJ mixes never approach.

Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister had already announced themselves with the G-Stoned EP, and they followed the DJ-Kicks entry with The K&D Sessions in 1998, the double album of remixes that made their name a shorthand for a whole tempo. Depeche Mode, Roni Size and Bomb the Bass all came back from a K&D remix sounding heavier and further underwater than they went in. The pair have run G-Stone Recordings out of Vienna ever since, and they have been notably unhurried about touring, which is part of why a Vancouver date registers as an event rather than a routine stop.

What the KiCKS 30 show actually is

This is not a live band reproducing the records. KiCKS 30 is built as an audiovisual set: Kruder and Dorfmeister behind the decks for full DJ sets, with bespoke visuals from Jascha Suess timed to the music, produced in collaboration with Vienna's Radio Superfly. The show ran through Europe earlier in 2026, including an open-air homecoming at Arena Wien in August and a September date at Munich's Muffathalle, before crossing to North America.

The North American leg is short and deliberate. It opened on September 23 at The Sound in Del Mar, then moved through The Novo in Los Angeles, Oakland's Fox Theater, Portland's Crystal Ballroom and Seattle's Showbox SoDo. Vancouver closes the western run on September 29 before the tour jumps to Brooklyn Steel on October 1 and Washington's Howard Theatre on October 3. Eight cities, one of them Canadian.

The Commodore is a fitting room for it. The sprung dance floor has spent decades absorbing exactly this kind of tempo, and the venue's capacity keeps a set that rewards attention from disappearing into an arena. For a record that was designed to be heard end to end rather than in fragments, a 1,000-capacity ballroom is closer to the intended setting than a festival field.
