A fast rise, and a room that reflects it

Todd was 22 when the Do That Again Tour was announced in June, days after the album landed. The record is his second full-length for Columbia, recorded across roughly six months in New York and Los Angeles, and it did the kind of numbers that reshape a touring plan: all 13 tracks charted on the U.S. Spotify chart in release week, and the album climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard 200. His single Earrings is RIAA platinum certified, and he made his debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon performing I Saw Your Face alongside it.

The tour itself is his most ambitious to date. After summer festival sets at Osheaga in Montreal and Outside Lands in San Francisco, the headline run opened in Irving, Texas on September 2 to a sold-out house, and the routing reads like a promotion: Radio City Music Hall in New York, the Fox Theatre in Detroit, The Salt Shed in Chicago, the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Reports from the opening night listed I Saw Your Face, Malcolm In The Middle and Breathe in the set, plus older favourites including Chest Pain (I Love).

Vancouver gets the show on a Sunday night, slotted between Seattle on October 15 and Portland on October 19, which makes the PNE Forum the last Canadian date of the tour. The Forum is a useful room for an artist at exactly this stage: bigger than the club circuit Todd was working two years ago, flexible enough that a general admission floor can carry the kind of crowd his songs attract, and far enough from the arena tier that the night should still feel like a concert rather than a production. Hastings Park shows also come with the practical upside of transit access and a venue that has spent the past few years hosting a steadily better class of touring act.

The music is worth arriving early for rather than treating as background. Do That Again pushes Todd's bedroom-pop foundation toward something more deliberately arranged, with clear debts to classic soul and 1970s R&B, and it trades in romantic obsession and self-reproach without much armour. Critics were split on whether the writing earns all of its confessional turns, but the live show is where these songs have the best case to make, and a full band in a room this size is the right setting for it.
