Vancouver gets night one
Opening nights usually go to a band's home market or a reliable mid-continent stadium. This one goes to Vancouver. Metallica confirmed on Tuesday that M72 will resume on May 8, 2027 at BC Place, the first of 12 North American stadium dates that run through to June 19 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. It is the only date on the leg outside the United States.
That matters locally for a second reason. Metallica have not played Vancouver since August 14, 2017, when they brought the WorldWired tour to BC Place with Avenged Sevenfold and Gojira. M72's earlier North American legs, in 2023 and 2024, skipped the city entirely. By the time the band walks out next May it will have been close to a decade.
The tour itself is already enormous. Since launching in April 2023, M72 has played 99 shows across 26 countries, with roughly five million people through the doors. The 2027 leg picks up after Metallica's Life Burns Faster residency at Sphere in Las Vegas, which runs from October 1, 2026 to March 13, 2027.
One night, not two
Anyone who followed M72's earlier legs will notice what is missing. The tour built its reputation on the "No Repeat Weekend" format: two nights in the same city, two entirely different setlists, two different support bills. The 2027 run drops it. Metallica confirmed the band will be "playing single shows" this time, which makes May 8 the whole of Vancouver's M72 and puts real pressure on the on-sale.
What does carry over is the staging. Metallica are keeping the in-the-round production at the 50-yard line, with the Snake Pit in the middle of the stage and the audience wrapped a full 360 degrees around the band. For a stadium show it is an unusually democratic layout, and it is the reason M72 has drawn the reviews it has.
Limp Bizkit and Avatar
Both support acts are returning to M72 rather than joining it for the first time. Limp Bizkit have spent the past few years in a genuine second act, playing to crowds that were not born when Significant Other came out, and a Vancouver stadium slot in front of Metallica is about as large as that revival gets. Avatar, the Swedish theatrical metal band, have been steady M72 companions and are well suited to a room this size. On a bill where the headliner plays in the round, the openers work a more conventional end stage, so arrive early if you want the full three sets.
Frequently asked questions
When does Metallica play Vancouver?
Saturday, May 8, 2027 at BC Place, with a 7:00 p.m. PT start. It is the opening night of the M72 World Tour's 2027 North American leg.
How do I get tickets?
The fan club presale starts Monday, September 21 at 10 a.m., a local presale runs Thursday, September 24 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the general on-sale begins Friday, September 25 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster.
Is Metallica playing more than one Vancouver show?
No. Unlike the "No Repeat Weekend" dates on earlier M72 legs, the 2027 run is single shows only, so May 8 is the city's one date. For everything else coming to town, see our Vancouver concert calendar.
