Why this show matters
Peter Hook is the reason a generation of guitar bands put the bass up front. His playing on Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures and Closer, and then across New Order's run through the 1980s and 1990s, turned the instrument into a lead voice rather than a rhythm-section afterthought. Since forming The Light in 2010, he has spent more than a decade working methodically through that catalogue on stage, usually one album at a time, in rooms small enough that the audience can hear how those basslines were actually built.
This tour's centrepiece is Get Ready, New Order's 2001 comeback record and the first the band released after an eight-year silence. It is a deliberately guitar-heavy album, closer to rock than to the dance floor the group had spent the previous decade colonising, and it produced the single "Crystal" along with a guest turn from Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan on "Turn My Way." It has never been the obvious pick for a full-album show, which is precisely what makes the choice interesting: Hook is giving a serious hearing to a record that tends to get skipped between Technique and the later reunions.
The Light do not treat these evenings as reverent recitals, either. Hook's sets have consistently paired the featured album with a deep run through Joy Division and New Order back catalogue, and he sings the Ian Curtis material himself, a decision that divided opinion when he started and has since become simply how these shows work. Expect a long night rather than a tidy one.
That the Vancouver date closes the tour adds a small amount of occasion. Bands tend to be at their loosest and their most road-hardened by the final night, and the Commodore's sprung dance floor has a way of rewarding that. It is also the right size of room for this music. Whatever these songs became in stadiums, they were written for spaces about this big.
Frequently asked questions
When do Peter Hook & The Light play Vancouver?
Sunday, September 27, 2026 at the Commodore Ballroom, 868 Granville Street. It is the closing date of the band's 2026 North American tour.
What will they play?
The tour is built around New Order's 2001 album Get Ready, performed alongside Joy Division and New Order favourites drawn from across Hook's career. Setlists vary night to night, so nothing beyond the album itself is guaranteed.
Is Peter Hook actually from New Order?
Yes. Hook co-founded Joy Division in 1976 and was the bassist in New Order from its formation in 1980 until he left the band in 2007. The Light is the group he has fronted since 2010.
