A concept record about revenge, staged as a western

The Vancouver date lands in the final stretch of a fall run built around The Outlaw Cherie Lee & Other Western Tales, the fourth Shaboozey album, released July 31 through his American Dogwood imprint in partnership with EMPIRE. It is a full concept record, and an unusually committed one. The story follows Cherie Lee, a sheriff's daughter who watches her father murdered by a gang called the Bootcut Boys, abandons the badge, and hunts them down one at a time. She falls for one of the outlaws along the way. It does not end well for either of them.

"Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going was a journal entry and an opportunity for the world to get to know more about me as a person," Shaboozey said when the album was announced in April. "But now I want to show the world who I am as an artist and storyteller." He described the record as a project several years in the making that went through many iterations before he finished it.

That framing matters for anyone buying a ticket. The Outlaws Never Die Tour is pitched as the album coming to life onstage alongside the hits, which means the Thunderbird show is likely to be built as a narrative rather than a straight run of singles. The tour opened in Phoenix on September 8 and closes at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on October 27, with Vancouver, Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles all carrying Carter Faith as support.

The artist who rewrote the Hot 100 record book

Shaboozey was born in Woodbridge, Virginia, to Nigerian parents, and grew up on a mix of classic hip-hop, R&B, blues and country. He was the only artist to appear twice on Beyonce's Cowboy Carter, and 2024's Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going turned that visibility into something much larger. Its single "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" tied the record for the longest-running No. 1 in Billboard Hot 100 history, is certified Diamond by the RIAA, and made him the first Black male artist to top the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs simultaneously.

The accolades kept arriving after that. He is an eight-time Grammy nominee who won his first award in 2026 for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, for "Amen" with Jelly Roll. Follow-up single "Good News" gave him a second No. 1 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart. The New York Times called him the most striking new country star of the past few years; Rolling Stone framed his work as honouring country tradition while moving it forward.

Why the UBC arena, and what that means for the night

The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre is not a room Vancouver associates with country music. It is the 2010 Olympic hockey venue on the UBC campus, and over the past two years it has quietly become the city's preferred mid-size arena for acts who are too big for the Commodore Ballroom and not quite ready to fill Rogers Arena. Kehlani, Tyla, Steve Lacy and Trivium all play there this fall. It is a markedly tighter room than Rogers Arena or BC Place, which should suit a record built on storytelling.

Getting there is the one thing worth planning. The arena is deep on the UBC campus at Wesbrook Mall and Thunderbird Boulevard, roughly 30 minutes by bus from downtown, with the 99 B-Line and the R4 running to the campus loop. On-campus parking fills early for arena nights, so transit is the sane choice for an 8:00 PM downbeat.
