A new trio, and the first Sleep music in eight years

Sleep announced the tour in June 2026 alongside "Have Spacesuit Will Travel," their first new recording since the 2018 album The Sciences and the first Sleep track ever made without Matt Pike. Released through Jack White's Third Man Records, it keeps the band's signature slow, enormous low end intact while introducing two players with deep underground pedigrees of their own. Dupree built his reputation on Void's furiously compressed hardcore, and Crover has spent nearly four decades behind the kit in the Melvins, one of the few bands whose influence on heavy music rivals Sleep's own.

The lineup change was not a small one. Sleep has always been understood as the Cisneros and Pike partnership, a two-headed riff engine that produced Sleep's Holy Mountain in 1992 and then the hour-long Dopesmoker, a record so uncommercial on arrival that it helped end the band's first run and so influential in hindsight that it effectively founded a genre. In the band's announcement, Cisneros wished Pike well and framed the new configuration as a continuation rather than a reinvention, saying the group is composing in the spirit of what was established decades ago.

Cisneros has kept busy in the interim. Om, his duo with Sleep's original drummer Chris Hakius and later Emil Amos, spent the 2000s and 2010s turning Sleep's heaviness inward into something closer to devotional minimalism, and that patience is audible in how the new Sleep material breathes. There is also a comic: Cisneros has worked with artists Dave Kloc and Arik Roper on the first issue of a Sleep comic book, also via Third Man, which extends the Marijuanaut mythology that has run through the band's lyrics since the beginning.

For Vancouver, the practical detail is scarcity. The September leg runs from San Diego on the 8th to Santa Ana on the 29th and touches Canada exactly once. The Commodore, with its sprung dance floor and roughly 1,000-person capacity, is also a considerably more intimate room than the theatres Sleep are playing in Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles on the same run. Anyone weighing options should note the calendar conflict: the Foo Fighters are at BC Place the same night, which makes September 20 one of the busiest Sundays on the fall schedule.
