Two nights in a room that holds about a thousand people
The rest of this itinerary is built out of performing arts centres, casino theatres and amphitheatres: Chicago's Auditorium Theatre, St. Paul's Palace Theatre, San Diego's Open Air Theatre, the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg. Vancouver instead gets a pair of nights at the Commodore Ballroom, a sprung-floor dance hall on Granville Street that holds roughly a thousand. Two Commodore shows add up to about the same room count as one mid-sized theatre, but they are a very different experience: no fixed seats, no proscenium, and a horn section close enough to feel.
It is also a signal of how well the band has been doing on this continent. Pollstar box office figures from UB40's 2025 North American run include 3,137 tickets sold at San Diego's Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre and 5,041 at Wolf Trap in Virginia. The Unstoppable Tour is their fifth consecutive year back in North America, and the Canadian leg is the most extensive they have played, with stops in Ottawa, Montreal, Moncton, Windsor, Niagara Falls, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary before the Vancouver double.
The band that arrives is not quite the band from the radio
UB40 formed in Birmingham in 1978, took their name from a British unemployment benefit form, and went on to more than 50 charting UK singles and 17 UK top 10 albums. Four founding members are still in the ranks: Robin Campbell, Jimmy Brown, Earl Falconer and Norman Hassan. The voice, though, belongs to Matt Doyle, who joined in 2021 from the Birmingham reggae band KIOKO after Duncan Campbell retired following a stroke. Doyle has now fronted four major UB40 tours and sang on UB45, the 2024 anniversary album of seven new songs and seven re-recorded classics that reached number five on the UK chart.
"We can't wait to embark on The Unstoppable Tour, as the tour title says that's how we are feeling," Robin Campbell said when the dates were announced. "New music, more shows than our last visit, and a more extensive tour of Canada." The band said at the time that they were in the studio on a new album intended for release ahead of the tour, so the Commodore setlists should carry material that did not exist the last time UB40 came through town.
Frequently asked questions
When do UB40 play Vancouver in 2026?
Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2026, both at the Commodore Ballroom, 868 Granville Street. Tickets for each night are sold separately through Ticketmaster.
Is this UB40 with Ali Campbell?
No. There are two touring acts using the name. The group playing the Commodore is UB40, the continuously operating band led by co-founder Robin Campbell with Matt Doyle on lead vocals. Ali Campbell, who left in 2008, tours separately as UB40 featuring Ali Campbell.
What else is happening in Vancouver that week?
Mid-October is dense: Bruno Mars is at BC Place, Doja Cat and aespa are at Rogers Arena, and the Commodore has 54-40 and Fruit Bats earlier in the month. The full listings are on our Vancouver concert calendar.
Scene in the Dark has covered Vancouver's live-music scene since 2010.
