Twenty years on, one album gets a tour of its own

Anniversary tours are common enough now that they can blur together. This one is unusual in scale. Rather than fold a few older songs into a regular set, Underoath have handed an entire North American run over to Define the Great Line, the 2006 album that reset what the band was capable of. They played it in full at Furnace Fest earlier this year before announcing the full anniversary tour in June.

The record arrived on June 20, 2006 and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, moving close to 100,000 copies in its first week. That was a startling result for a metalcore album with almost nothing on it built for radio. "Writing on the Walls" was the single, but the rest of the album leaned into something heavier and stranger: post-metal atmosphere, industrial interludes, and Spencer Chamberlain's screams pushed further into the red than on the band's 2004 breakthrough They're Only Chasing Safety. Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage and Matt Goldman produced it, and the cavernous sound they found has aged better than most of what surrounded it.

Keyboardist Chris Dudley framed the tour in plain terms when it was announced: "What this album has meant to us, and so many others, over the past 20 years is hard to quantify. It gave us permission to be ourselves." He called the chance to devote a whole tour to the record "bucket list material" for the band.

The rest of the bill is not filler

The support here is a genuine draw on its own. August Burns Red have been a fixture of American metalcore for two decades and are among the few bands from that era still playing at full strength. Atreyu carried the more melodic wing of the same scene through the 2000s. As Cities Burn, who open the Vancouver date, were labelmates and contemporaries of Underoath in the years around Define the Great Line and have spent most of the last decade playing only sporadically. Four bands from one moment in a genre's history, on one stage, is the kind of package that is easier to announce than to actually assemble.

Why the PNE Forum matters here

Vancouver is one of only two Canadian stops on this leg, alongside Montreal on November 28. The PNE Forum has become the city's default room for touring heavy bills at this size, sitting between club capacity and an arena, and it has handled similar nights well this fall. Seattle gets the tour the night before at the Paramount Theatre, which makes November 17 the last chance on the West Coast north of San Francisco.
