Review: sombr w/ Interpol @ Rogers Arena - September 29, 2026

Opening nights carry their own kind of electricity, and on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, sombr kicked off his You Are The Reason Tour at Rogers Arena with the confidence of an artist who has decided, very quickly, that arenas are where he belongs. Barely out of his teens and riding the enormous success of his debut I Barely Know Her, the New York singer-songwriter turned the first night of the run into a genuine event.

The production was a spectacle in itself. The stage looked less like a rock show and more like something out of a theatre production, all dramatic sets and lighting, and sombr prowled every inch of it. He is a natural showman who never stopped working the crowd: at one point he climbed down and simply sat among the audience, and later grabbed a can of spray paint and tagged “sombr loves Vancouver” across the set to a deafening roar. It was a high-energy, charismatic performance from start to finish.

Musically he leaned on the songs that made him a star. He opened with “we never dated” and moved through “under the mat,” “perfume,” “Homewrecker” and the newer “My Body Isn't Ready,” saving his biggest guns for last: the smouldering “undressed,” the aching “back to friends” and closing with “12 to 12” twice, that had the whole arena singing every word back at him both times.

The support bill was the night's real curveball. Interpol felt like an odd choice to pair with a Gen-Z pop phenomenon, and on paper the two acts could hardly be more different, but the veteran New York post-punks put on a great set that longtime fans clearly relished, especially given that Interpol had not played Vancouver in almost a decade.

For an opening night, it was remarkably assured. sombr already carries himself like a seasoned headliner, and if this is where the tour starts, the rest of it is in very good hands. A theatrical, high-energy launch.
